How We Keep Your Project Safe
Safety isn't an afterthought at Wren & Stone - it's built into how we plan, price and run every project. We invest time, training and resources in our staff and trades because a safe site is what allows us to deliver the quality and reliability we promise. Here's how we put that into practice:
SKATE: Assessing Every Trade
Before any subcontractor or trade joins one of our projects, we assess them against the SKATE framework - Skills, Knowledge, Attitude, Training and Experience. This gives us a clear, consistent way to judge whether someone is genuinely competent to carry out the work safely, not just qualified on paper, so everyone on site meets the same standard.
Due Diligence
We carry out thorough due diligence on every subcontractor and supplier before they're engaged, checking insurances, accreditations, qualifications and references, and reviewing risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) for the work involved. This vetting happens before a single trade sets foot on site, so problems are caught before they can happen.
Welfare on Site
Every site we run is set up with proper welfare facilities - clean toilets, a dry area to shelter and take breaks, access to drinking water, and a tidy, well-organised site. Looking after the people doing the work is part of looking after the project; a team that's comfortable and well cared for works safer and better.
First Aid
We make sure trained first aiders, fully stocked first aid kits and clear emergency procedures are in place on every site. Accidents and near misses are recorded and reviewed, so we're constantly learning and reducing risk on the next project as well as the current one.
Investing in Our People
Our approach to safety goes hand in hand with investing in our people. We support our staff and trusted trades with ongoing training, industry certifications and opportunities to develop, because the more skilled and supported our teams are, the safer and better the outcome for every client. It's an investment in the future of our business as much as theirs.
Health & Safety Policy
At Wren & Stone, the safety and wellbeing of our employees, subcontractors, clients and members of the public is our top priority. We are committed to ensuring that every project we undertake, from small renovations to large-scale new builds, is carried out in a manner that protects everyone who may be affected by our work.
We take a proactive approach to safe working conditions, ensuring that risks are identified and controlled before work begins, and that our teams have the training, equipment and supervision they need to work safely at all times. We believe that a safe site is a productive site, and we hold ourselves and our subcontractors to consistently high standards.
We are committed to the continuous improvement of our health and safety performance, regularly reviewing our procedures in light of new guidance, changing regulations and lessons learned from our own projects, so that our approach keeps pace with best practice across the construction industry.
This is the general Health and Safety Policy Statement of 2nd Chapter Developments Ltd (trading as Wren & Stone), in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Our policy is to:
• Control the health and safety risks arising from our work activities
• Consult with our employees and subcontractors on matters affecting their health and safety
• Provide and maintain safe plant and equipment
• Ensure the safe handling and use of substances
• Provide information, instruction and supervision for employees and subcontractors
• Ensure all employees are competent to do their tasks, and give them adequate training
• Prevent accidents and cases of work-related ill health
• Maintain safe and healthy working conditions on all sites
• Review and revise this policy as necessary at regular intervals
We also comply with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM 2015) on every project we undertake, working with our clients, principal designers and other duty holders to plan, manage and monitor health and safety from design through to completion, and preparing a Construction Phase Plan where required.
Responsibility for health and safety rests with everyone at Wren & Stone, from site operatives to senior management, and we expect the same commitment from every subcontractor and supplier we work with.
